The Next Few Weeks...

For the next few weeks we will be learning about our earth and how to take care of it.  This includes reducing our waste, reusing and recycling, and we will finish this unit with a trip to Montpelier High School to plant lettuce that will be used in our school lunches.  We will be taking this walking field trip on Wednesday, May 11th at 1:00 .  Feel free to join us.

We will also be doing an in class planting project.  I'd like for the children to bring in something they can recycle into a small flower pot (for a seed or two). You can help support this learning by talking about what and how we can recycle and reuse things that we would ordinarily throw away (ex/soda bottles, tuna cans, baby food jars, etc).  Please be sure that they are clean and that the labels have been removed.

Thanks for your help and support with this project.  If you've any other ideas for a recycling project, please feel free to share.

In Loving Memory...

Ninja Boy French Fry
October 2010-April 2011

We lost our dear classroom pet on Monday.  While many of the students were saddened, it was a great opportunity to revisit life cycles and to share our feelings.  Alex Z brought in a book about losing pets and we all wrote a letter to Ninja Boy today.  The children were encouraged to write whatever they felt.  We brainstormed some things we might want to write.  Here are some things the children had to say:
  • You are a great fish
  • We were happy to have you as a class pet
  • I want to write a song for you
  • I love you, Ninja Boy
  • You were the greatest fish in the whole world
  • You were the greatest fish in the whole universe
After writing our letters, we went outside, chose a spot in the butterfly garden, said our last goodbyes and buried him.  Some even said a little prayer afterwards.  Then... they all ran off to play!  Seriously! :)

Watch for the letters they wrote.  It was a wonderful learning experience for all of us.

Thai Cooking Lesson with Gigi

Last week our MHS intern, Gigi taught us how to make a Thai dessert. She brought in all of the ingredients and taught us how to cut, roll, fry, and serve Crispy Banana. The children loved folding these little pockets of deliciousness and were eager to share their creations with their families. Luckily there were enough spring roll wrappers to go around. We shared our treats with Mr. Bradley and some fortunate parents and siblings. Stop in to see Gigi at Royal Orchid, where she works with her family. Crispy Banana is on the menu...
